Trump Promises Green Cards for Indian Students in New Immigration Policy | Admissify

Donald Trump, a former U.S. President, has decided to roll out a new initiative to give automatic Green Cards to any non-American alumna from any of the United States’ colleges. This is with the hopes of keeping the nation’s best professionals within its borders as well as averting a bourgeois exodus back to India or China, where they find great prosperity more often than not.

“What I want to do and what I will do is–you graduate from a college, I think you should get a Green Card automatically as part of your diploma, a Green Card to stay in this country. And that includes junior colleges too,” Trump declared during the “All-In” podcast.

The podcast, hosted by four venture capitalists including Chamath Palihapitiya, Jason Calacanis, David Sacks, and David Friedberg, featured Trump responding to a direct request from Calacanis to “promise us you will give us more ability to import the best and brightest around the world to America.” Trump, the presumptive Republican Party candidate, lamented stories of talented graduates who were forced to leave the U.S. to implement their innovative ideas in their home countries, thereby becoming successful entrepreneurs and job creators abroad.

“…and they become multi-billionaires employing thousands and thousands of people, and it could have been done here,” Trump emphasised. He expressed his frustration over losing talented graduates from prestigious institutions like Harvard and MIT and other noteworthy schools.

With this stance, Trump has reiterated his first-term policy, which allowed foreign students to obtain Green Cards after completing STEM courses in the US (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). He emphasised that anyone graduating, whether after two or four years or earning a doctorate, should be able to remain in the country.

“We force the brilliant people, the people that graduate from college, the people that are number one in their class from the best colleges, you have to be able to recruit these people and keep the people,” Trump asserted. He highlighted the difficulty top graduates face in finding employment due to uncertainty about their ability to stay in the country.

The context of Trump’s announcement comes against the backdrop of increasing numbers of international students in the U.S. India, the second-largest source of international students, reached a record high of 268,923 students in the 2022/23 academic year, marking a 35 per cent increase from the previous year. Over the period from 2022 to 2023, both China and India accounted for 53% of total students, with 27% coming from China and 25% from India. This is different from what happened in 2017-18, where there were 33% Chinese Students and 18% Indians.

The immigration plan put forth by Trump underscores a change in policy regarding students emphasising their educational background and access to financial support. And if it comes to fruition, it could dramatically change the opportunities for international students, allowing them to stay in the US and pursue their careers without facing immigration-related obstacles. Furthermore, an easier road to permanent access would allow the U.S. has be very exciting as a top destination for global talent, especially in India.
