Packing for study abroad can be tricky, especially when you’re heading to a foreign country with different climates, cultures, and daily necessities. To make your experience easier, here’s a guide on 5 niche items to bring and 5 things you should leave behind.
5 Niche Things to Pack for Study Abroad
- Black and Silver Sharpies: You might not think of it at first, but Sharpies can be a lifesaver. Whether you’re labeling food in the communal fridge, marking your personal items, or adding your name to something that’s easy to lose track of, these markers will come in handy. Living with roommates means sharing spaces and occasionally misplacing things, so it’s best to keep your stuff easily identifiable.
- Handheld Luggage Scale: A handheld luggage scale is one of those tools you might not realize you need until it’s too late. Whether you’re packing light or tend to overpack, this device will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises at the airport. Pro tip: since some luggage scales have lithium batteries, remember to pack them in your carry-on, as these batteries aren’t allowed in checked luggage.
- Bug Spray: You may not expect it, but some countries have quite a few bugs—especially mosquitoes. Having bug spray on hand can prevent uncomfortable bites and itchy days. It’s better to be safe than sorry when you’re exploring new places outdoors or even relaxing in your temporary home.
- Women’s Toiletries: Though you can find toiletries abroad, they may not always meet the quality or comfort level you’re used to at home. A good friend of mine quickly learned this after a mishap with a local tampon brand. To avoid any discomfort or surprises, pack enough of your preferred toiletries for the duration of your stay.
- A Credit Card with No Foreign Transaction Fees: This is an absolute must. When you’re abroad, foreign transaction fees can add up fast, and you don’t want to be hit with unexpected charges. Make sure your card is international-friendly, or better yet, open an account with a bank that caters to travelers.

5 Things to Leave at Home
- Puffer Jacket: If you’re going somewhere with a mild climate, like Rome, you won’t need heavy winter gear. A puffer jacket will just take up valuable space in your suitcase. Stick with lighter layers that you can mix and match. However, if you do need one send it over for anyone that is visiting you or buy one locally at a thrift or store!
- Multiple Sweaters: Bringing multiple sweaters can quickly become a regret. For warmer destinations, the majority of your stay will be spent in hotter temperatures, and bulky sweaters take up room in your luggage. Stick to one or two that you can layer when needed.
- Designer Clothing and Shoes: As tempting as it may be to show off your style, designer items aren’t practical for study abroad. Not only can they attract unwanted attention, but they also aren’t great for everyday wear. Save them for special occasions, or better yet, leave them at home to avoid damage or loss.
- Mirror: This may sound odd, but some students bring handheld or decorative mirrors with them. I brought one myself, but it shattered during the flight and ended up being more trouble than it was worth. If your accommodation doesn’t already have one, you can always buy an affordable mirror locally.
- Books: As much as you might love to read, bringing too many books can weigh down your luggage. Stick to one good read for flights and downtime, as most of your focus will be on your studies or exploring. Plus, you can always buy or borrow books while abroad.
