5 Things to Pack for Study Abroad in Dublin and 5 Things to Leave at Home

5 things to pack:

  1. Electric Outlet Converters– If you are traveling to Ireland, you will need a UK outlet adapter. I recommend getting a few before you leave on Amazon and packing them in your suitcase. This way, you will be able to have a charged phone right when you move in to your new place!
  2. Comfortable Walking Shoes– Dublin is definitely a walking city, so it is important to pack comfortable shoes. It also rains a lot, so waterproof or non-slip shoes are great too.
  3. Travel Backpack- For weekend trips or hikes, I would recommend a smaller size backpack that is lightweight and durable. A large shoulder bag gets to be uncomfortable and heavy. It is also good for fitting under the Ryanair seats on the plane.
  4. Rain Jacket– It rains all the time in Dublin, so a nice rain jacket is essential. Also, get one that you actually like to wear, because you will definitely be getting a lot of use out of it. I recommend the Columbia or North Face ones!
  5. Towel– This one might seem random, but I found that bringing a towel was very useful. My apartment did not come with any, so it was nice not having to run out to a store right away. Especially, since moving to a new city can be disorientating at first, and you might want to just take a shower after the long flight. It is also useful for the beach and sitting outside in the park.

5 things not to pack:

  1. Heavy Winter Clothes– While Dublin can be chilly, especially in the winter, it’s rarely bitterly cold. Instead of packing bulky coats, heavy scarves, and tons of winter gear, opt for layering options such as lightweight waterproof jackets, sweaters, and long sleeve shirts. Although bring at least one winter coat if you are there in November/December.
  2. Multiple Pairs of Shoes– Avoid packing too many pairs of shoes. Ireland’s weather is often wet, so a couple of durable pairs should be enough. I would leave behind heels or sandals.
  3. Excessive Toiletries– Toiletries like shampoos, soaps, and lotions can easily be bought in Dublin. There’s no need to pack large quantities of these items, since local stores like Boots offer plenty of options. You can purchase them as you run low, saving space in your luggage. I would just bring a few travel-sized toiletries to get you started.
  4. Expensive Jewelry and Valuables– I think it is best to leave expensive jewelry or other valuables at home. Dublin is very safe, although you might lose track of your things more easily, since it is a new place. It is never a great idea to travel with expensive jewelry any way!
