One of the best things about studying abroad in Monaco is how easy it is to explore nearby cities. For example Marseille is just a three hour train ride away and it’s free with a student zou pass! It is a historical port city where you can enjoy incredible food and fashion. If you are studying in Monaco you can’t miss this city. That’s why we decided to do a one day trip with my friends to Marseille.
When we arrived, we started at Marseille’s iconic Old Port. This port is the heart of the city, and walking around it is completely free. The mix of fishing boats, sea breezes, and stunning views made it the perfect. For the full experience we decided to visit a nearby cafe which had delicious croissants and coffee for a quick breakfast.
One of the unexpected memories of the trip was discovering the largest H&M store in France, located in a beautiful historical building near the city center. It had 3 floors and the unique collection (which you won’t see anywhere else). The architecture details and elegant interior make it worth a visit, even if you don’t like the brand.
No trip to Marseille is complete without visiting Notre-Dame de la Garde, the stunning basilica based on a hill over the city. The panoramic views of the sea, the Old Port, and Marseille’s rooftops are breathtaking. It’s free to visit, and whether you walk up or take a bus, the view alone is worth the trip. We actually decided to walk uphill from the H&M store and it took us about 25 minues. However, we really enjoyed the views and I would recommend walking rather than taking a bus.
For lunch, we went to Le Panier, the city’s oldest neighborhood. Its colorful streets are full of charm, street art, and cozy restaurants. I tried bouillabaisse, the local fish stew that Marseille is famous for, and it was unforgettable. If fish isn’t your thing, don’t worry there are plenty of other dishes to enjoy.
Before catching the train back to Monaco, we decided to walk along the Old Port as the sun set. The sky turned shades of orange and pink, reflecting beautifully on the water. We grabbed gelato and enjoyed the magical atmosphere.
