A Perfect Day Trip to Île Sainte-Marguerite and Fort Royal

At the end of September, my friend and I decided to take a trip to Île Sainte-Marguerite. We had heard a lot about the island’s beauty and its historic fort, so we couldn’t wait to explore!

We started our journey by catching a boat from the port of Cannes. The ride was short, just 15 minutes, but it felt like we were being transported to another world. The calm blue waters, the soft breeze, and the views of Cannes made the trip so relaxing. As we approached the island, we could see the walls of Fort Royal in the distance, and it was clear this day trip would be the best.

The island is famous for being the place where the mysterious “Man in the Iron Mask” was imprisoned, which added an air of mystery to our visit. We couldn’t wait to learn more about the fort’s past and see the amazing views from the top.

When we arrived at the island, we stepped off the boat and were immediately surprised by the beautiful landscape. The island is full of pine trees, palms, and other Mediterranean plants, making it a perfect place for nature lovers. The air was fresh and smelled of the sea and the trees, which made us feel even more relaxed.

We began by walking along the paths around the island. The island is small, so it’s easy to explore on foot, and the peaceful atmosphere made it an enjoyable walk. As we made our way toward Fort Royal, we passed by a few small beaches where people were laying on the sand and swimming in the clear water.

When we reached Fort Royal, we were amazed by its size and history. The fort was built in the 17th century and was used as a military wall, as well as a prison. It’s famous for housing the “Man in the Iron Mask,” a mysterious prisoner whose identity is still unknown. We took a guided tour of the fort, where we learned about its history and saw exhibits about the prison and the people who were held there. The views from the top of the fort were absolutely breathtaking, with a wide view of the island and the surrounding sea.

After exploring the fort, we took a walk around the island and enjoyed the natural beauty. The only challenge for us was the amount of spiders and insects! If you also are scared of everything that is alive please wear more clothes and stay away from trees. But, the peaceful atmosphere made it easy to forget about the stresses of everyday life. We spent some time sitting on a bench, looking at the water and enjoying the quiet time.

As we made our way back to the boat, we couldn’t stop talking about how amazing the day had been. Île Sainte-Marguerite is the perfect place to relax, enjoy nature, and learn about history. It’s only a short boat ride from Cannes, but it feels like a world away. If you’re ever in the area, I highly recommend taking a trip to this beautiful island – you won’t regret it!
