Adventures in Ireland!

Nia Lewis (’25) is a Communication major studying at the University of Aberdeen for Fall 2024.

One of the best things about studying in Aberdeen is that I have easy access to other countries that I’ve always wanted to visit; one of them being Ireland! A few weeks ago, my friends and I spent a weekend in Ireland and here are some tips and recommendations for places to stay and things to do.

Flights and Hotels:

For this trip, we knew that we mostly wanted to stay close to Dublin’s City Centre. We managed to find a good price for round trip flights through Aer Lingus, so we quickly snagged tickets through them. If you are looking to save money on hotels, hostels are a great way to get the most for your money without going over budget. However, I am not a huge fan of the communal aspect of hostels, so while my friends stayed in a hostel, I booked an AirBnb. We were still located relatively close to each other, so we still got to travel around together.

Guinness Storehouse:

Personally, I am not a huge fan of beer or alcoholic beverages, but I went with my friend since she did not want to go alone and we had a great time! I would highly recommend buying the self-guided tour ticket that comes with a pint of Guinness (if you are of age of course), but even if you do not drink and you just want to tour the facility you can get a free soft drink with your ticket. The storehouse was huge and had seven levels to explore that went through the history of the company and the brewing process. They had many fun exhibits and displays, but my favorite part of the tour was getting my selfie printed on top of my free pint. We also got to join in on a tasting session where you get another free taste of Guinness. The entire place was also decorated for Christmas which made the experience much more enjoyable.

National Leprechaun Museum of Ireland:

We accidentally found this place, but it ended up being one of my favorite stops on the trip! The museum is not traditional in the sense where it has exhibits or artifacts for you to browse through or learn about. Instead, the museum prioritizes storytelling. We booked an open session with one of their resident storytellers and she guided us through all of the rooms of the museum and retold old leprechaun fables while we sat and listened. The experience sounds a bit unconventional, but it was so fun learning more about such a unique topic.

We also visited a ton of restaurants, so here are a few recommendations:

Takara Ramen:

When we visited we made sure to go close to opening time and even though we got there early we still had to wait in line; that’s how good the food was. The prices were cheap and they served large portions. I am not a huge sushi fan, so I ordered their Takara Soul Ramen with Shrimp Tempura which was delicious.

Toscana Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria:

GO HERE! We ordered pizza and potatoes and I promise it was one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had. I wanted to get their tiramisu because the table next to us got it and it looked good, but I was too full, so get that too.

The Merchant’s Arch Bar & Restaurant:

The atmosphere was quite nice and the entire restaurant was decorated for Christmas. They also had live music which was fun to listen to while we ate. However, the food was not the best and it was expensive for what we got. There are some better options around the city center.

I wish that we had more time to go on tours and to travel outside of the city center, but we had a weekend and I definitely plan to travel back soon!
