Amsterdam Top 5 Museums to Visit

By: Emma Janssen

Amsterdam is a bustling city with incredible tourist attractions that you must see when you’re here! Having spent almost three months studying abroad in Amsterdam, I’ve had the chance to explore its rich cultural landscape and would love to share my top 5 list, in no particular order, of museums that are a must-see during your time abroad.

1. Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum was one of the highlights of my first visit to Amsterdam many years ago, and it remains one of the best museums I have ever visited. This museum offers an in-depth exploration of Vincent van Gogh’s life through his paintings and drawings. Notable examples include “Sunflowers,” “Almond Blossoms,” and Van Gogh’s famous self-portraits, all of which left a profound impact on me. If you are an art enthusiast, this museum is an absolute must-visit.

2. Amsterdam Museum on the Amstel

Whilst I’m studying here, the Amsterdam Museum is temporarily located on the Amstel, in the building of the H’ART Museum. This museum offers a fascinating journey through Amsterdam’s history, showcasing everything from stories during the Second World War to contemporary social movements through thousands of artworks. I was very impressed with the Amsterdam Museum and learned a lot about the city, so I would consider it a must-visit for anyone looking to understand the city’s rich and diverse past.

3. Wereld Museum

Despite initially visiting the Wereld Museum for a class assignment, it quickly became one of my favorites. The museum is a vast and vibrant space, with each floor dedicated to a unique theme. I was particularly captivated by the exhibition on fashion in countries colonized by the Netherlands. The museum offers a profound exploration of the Netherlands’ role in colonization, with engaging and informative interactive features. The diverse exhibits, immersive displays, and thoughtful curation make it an enriching experience that provides insight into global history.

4. Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum is renowned for its modern and contemporary art, and is conveniently located near the Van Gogh Museum. Though I’m not a big fan of modern art, my visit to this museum was both entertaining and enlightening. I was intrigued by the thought processes of the artists featured in the museum. The artwork was beautiful and thought provoking, offering a unique perspective on contemporary creativity. However, I would like to give a trigger warning for one section of the museum, as it deals with heavy themes and contains some disturbing imagery. I recommend visiting for anyone interested in exploring the evolution of modern art and design.

5. Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House offers a poignant exploration of Amsterdam’s history during the Holocaust, as seen through the eyes of Anne Frank, based on her diary. This historical museum was deeply moving and provided me with a newfound understanding of the impact the Holocaust had on the Jewish community finding refuge in the Netherlands. What stood out to me was how unassuming the Anne Frank House looks compared to the surrounding buildings, making the experience even more powerful. Hearing Anne’s story from the perspective of someone who lived through those harrowing times was incredibly influential and I recommend it to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Amsterdam’s museums offer a rich tapestry of history, art, and culture, making the city a treasure trove for any visitor. Whether you’re captivated by the intricate brushstrokes of Van Gogh, fascinated by the historical narratives at the Anne Frank House, or intrigued by the modern masterpieces at the Stedelijk Museum, there’s something for everyone. Each museum on this list provides a unique window into different aspects of both Amsterdam and the broader world, making your visit not just entertaining but deeply enriching. Make sure to carve out time to explore my top 5 museums on your next trip to Amsterdam! They promise not only to educate, but to inspire and leave a lasting impression on your journey through this vibrant city.
