As an international student from Monaco spending a quarter at Drexel University, every week feels like a new adventure. This past week was no exception, filled with new experiences, local traditions, and little moments of joy that make Philadelphia feel more like home.
This week I tried Domino’s for the very first time. Growing up in Europe, pizza always came with thin crusts and simple toppings, so the American take was a big change! My friends insisted we order their signature cheesy bread too, which was absolutely delicious. It was such a cozy afternoon, and it reminded me how food has a way of bringing people together, even when it’s delivered in a cardboard box.
Later in the week, my friend invited me over to her house to help decorate for Christmas. This was my first time seeing a real American Christmas tree being set up! We spent hours stringing lights, hanging ornaments, and laughing about how her cat kept trying to climb into the tree. It was heartwarming to be included in her family’s traditions, and it made me think of my own family back home in Hungary and our holiday customs.
I’ve also been incredibly grateful for the weather. It’s still sunny and mild, which makes it perfect for exploring the city. One afternoon, I took a walk in the park near the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The leaves are a mix of vibrant yellows and reds, and I love how the crisp air energizes me. There’s a calmness there that makes it the perfect spot to unwind.
Another favorite part of Philly is crossing the bridge every time I go into Center City. The view of the Philly skyline from the Schuylkill River is stunning, especially at sunset. Watching the golden light reflect off the water and skyscrapers feels magical, and it’s moments like these that make me fall in love with the city. Walking along the river and seeing the mix of urban life and nature is such a refreshing experience, especially for someone like me who’s used to Monaco’s Mediterranean charm.
Philadelphia continues to surprise me with its warmth, charm, and endless opportunities for discovery. This week reminded me how lucky I am to be here, making memories I’ll cherish forever.
