Whose party it was? What was the occasion?

My best friend held a party two months ago; however, we did not know what we were all celebrating. Later, she announced that we were there to celebrate her engagement to her boyfriend. When she announced it, we were all thrilled.

Where was the party held? Who were the guests?

The party was hosted in her new house, which caught us off guard since we were unaware of it. There was enough room for all of us to play games and dance, and it was lovely as it was decorated with flowers and balloons. Everyone was invited, including our family, college, school, and childhood friends.

What did people do during the party?

Everyone arrived on time, so at first we were all startled since we didn’t know why this spot was chosen, but then my sister entered and revealed the first surprise, that she had bought that house, and secondly, she bent down on one knee in front of us to propose to her boyfriend. We enjoyed cutting the cake and continued the party by playing games, dancing wildly, and eating dinner.

She then gave a lovely speech describing their interaction, which overwhelmed us all. Overall, the party was fun, and I treasure those memories now.

Conclusion

Because this moment will never come when everyone we love will be in the same place, we all try to take advantage of it as much as possible. We all felt pleased since we adored her so much and were grateful to be a part of this special occasion.

Sample answer 3: Describe a Party that You Enjoyed

A party that I enjoyed was my friend’s send-off party. To be honest, I don’t enjoy parties; instead, I prefer family gatherings where I get to spend time with all of my cousins. Therefore, I like parties occasionally. I will talk about the one I visited on December 31, 2022. It was one of my friend Rohan’s last parties in India before he moved to America.

Whose party it was? What was the occasion?

Rohan had given us a party as he moved abroad to further his studies. We have known each other since we were kids and remained friends through college, so we have a strong friendship bond. We all recognized him for his accomplishments and felt ecstatic that he would continue his education in America.

Where was the party held? Who were the guests?

The gathering was planned at his farmhouse, where we had a private pool, and the atmosphere was celebratory. He invited all of our childhood and school friends, and it was also a get-together to welcome the new year for us and to start a new chapter in his professional life.

What did people do during the party?

We all were very excited to meet everyone as we had not met for a long time; we all interacted with each other and shared about things going on in each other’s lives, laughed at our old memories and incidents, saw clips from our school days which reminded us how time had passed so quickly, we all danced our hearts out, and had dinner together.

Explain what you enjoyed about this party.

The reunion with my old friends at this party, where we hadn’t spoken much since 12th grade, was the highlight for me, along with celebrating Rohan’s accomplishments. At some point during the celebration, I started to get a little emotional.

Conclusion

We all made an attempt to capture as many memories as we could because we were unsure of when we would all meet again. So, we welcomed the new year, enjoyed our time together, and bade farewell to our best friend, Rohan.

Follow-Up Questions for IELTS Cue Card topic: Describe a Party you enjoyed

  1. What are the main reasons people organize family parties in your country?

In my country, we frequently arrange family get-togethers to honor important milestones and successes like marriages, birthdays, anniversaries, and spiritual fests. These meetings permit families to reconnect with each other, fortifying connections and crafting unforgettable moments. They give a feeling of attachment and harmony that helps create a lovingly supportive familial atmosphere.

On the other hand, some family functions in my homeland might be planned due to social compulsion or obligation instead of true wish. Families may sometimes be forced to organize grand occasions to maintain societal rank or fulfill expectations, leading to tension and financial pressure. These meetings may need more realness and deep relations, leading towards shallow communication and stretched relationships.

  1. People spend too much money on parties and celebrations. What is your opinion on this?

Spending a lot of money on parties and occasions is normal for some people. These meetings are typically viewed as moments to display kindness and welcome guests warmly, improving social relationships and encouraging community spirit. Besides this, they generate treasured recollections and maintain our cultural customs which add happiness and well-being in families’ overall life.

However, spending too much on these parties can also be a worrying trend. It could result in financial problems and needless stress to satisfy social expectations, particularly for families with less income. More so, it might encourage materialism and shallow values, hiding the real significance of valuable relationships and family experiences shared together.

  1. Have you ever hosted a party or celebration of any kind? What was your experience?

Last year, I hosted my grandparents’ 50th anniversary party. I was nervous initially as I had never organized parties before, but I surprisingly did well. It was an exhilarating and, at the same time, exhausting experience for me. Nevertheless, the party was a success, and I learned a lot of things from this experience.
