Exploring Taipei on Two Wheels: The Riverside Park Ride Experience

(By Ronnie Lin, Program Coordinator)

If you’re planning to study in Taipei, one of the best ways to experience the city is by hopping on a bike and taking a ride through Taipei’s beautiful riverside parks. Whether you’re a casual cyclist or a fitness enthusiast, the Taipei Riverside Park Ride offers an ideal escape from the busy city streets, letting you soak in the scenery while getting some exercise.

The best part? It’s incredibly convenient thanks to the YouBike system, a public bike-sharing network that’s easy to use and available all over the city. Just grab a bike at any station, and you’re good to go! One of my favorite routes, and one I highly recommend, is the ride along Dajia Riverside Park.

Why Dajia Riverside Park is a Must-Visit

Starting at Dajia Riverside Park, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Taipei, surrounded by nature, yet still close to the city’s landmarks. As you pedal along, you can catch a glimpse of the Grand Hotel Taipei, an iconic red building that stands majestically over the city. Whether you’re biking early in the morning or later in the day, the view is always stunning.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot planes flying overhead, as this route takes you near Songshan Airport. Watching planes take off and land as you ride along the riverside adds a unique urban feel to the experience. It’s a fun contrast to the more tranquil vibes of the park, where families can often be seen playing by the playground or simply enjoying the day.

An Extended Ride to Taipei 101 and Songshan Night Market

For those who are feeling adventurous, you can keep riding from Dajia Riverside Park all the way to Songshan Night Market, one of Taipei’s best-known food spots. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to see Taipei 101 in the distance, a towering landmark that defines Taipei’s skyline. The ride itself is smooth, with dedicated bike lanes keeping you safe from traffic, and plenty of places to stop for photos along the way. Songshan Night Market is the perfect destination for a post-ride snack, offering everything from fried chicken to stinky tofu— a must-try for the brave!

Practical Tips for Your Ride

If you’re thinking about giving this route a try, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, bring plenty of water, especially during the summer months when Taipei can get quite hot. A small backpack with essentials like sunscreen and a hat is also a good idea. The ride is generally flat and not too challenging, so even if you’re not a regular cyclist, you should be able to handle it with ease. A good goal is to aim for about one hour of cycling, which gives you plenty of time to enjoy the scenery without feeling rushed.

One thing I love about riding here on the weekends is seeing local families out and about. The riverside parks are filled with kids swinging baseball bats or tossing around baseballs, adding a lively, fun atmosphere to your ride. If you time it right, you’ll also catch a gorgeous sunset over the river, making it a perfect way to end your day.

Why You Should Try It

Biking along Taipei’s riverside parks is not only a great way to stay active, but it also gives you a different perspective of the city. You’ll experience both urban and natural views, all while enjoying a laid-back, relaxing ride. Plus, with the YouBike system, you don’t need to own a bike to join in— just rent one at any YouBike station, and you’re set!

So, if you’re thinking about coming to Taipei to study, definitely add the Taipei Riverside Park Ride to your list of things to do. It’s a fantastic way to explore the city, stay active, and make some unforgettable memories.
