Lately, I’ve noticed many job seekers using a generic template to announce being open to work. Here’s an example of one such bland, impersonal announcement. It doesn’t provide enough information to be helpful IMHO. Would you easily know how to help this person?
Key Components of a Powerful Job Search Announcement
Draft your announcement somewhere other than LinkedIn for easier editing and formatting. The ideal length is between 300-400 words. You want it to be easily skimmable so keep your paragraphs short.
1. Be Specific, Not Vague
Avoid the temptation to appear “open to anything,” which translates to “not committed to anything” in your network’s eyes. Instead, be laser-focused:
- Specify the exact job titles you’re targeting
- Highlight your preferred industries
- Outline ideal projects, areas of work, or processes/procedures you enjoy and are good at
Example: Instead of saying “Seeking marketing roles,” try “Looking for Senior Digital Marketing Manager or Digital Strategy Consultant positions in tech or sustainable industries, with a focus on growth marketing and customer acquisition strategies.”
2. Craft a Clear Call to Action
Your network wants to help, but they need explicit guidance. Make it incredibly simple for connections to support you. Directly state what you want:
- “I’m looking for introductions to hiring managers in digital marketing”
- “Please share my post”
- “Please forward this post to someone you know in the [industry]”

Text-only posts on LinkedIn do not perform as well (reach as many people) as posts with an image. You can use the default, generic LinkedIn image generated when you select to post your #OpenToWork announcement. But it will look like everyone else’s. Consider adding a custom graphic or professional headshot
Tip: The best size for your image is either 1080 x 1080 pixels (square) or 1920 x 1080 pixels (portrait). Canva is a free graphic design tool that helps you create an eye-catching image.
6. Leverage Additional LinkedIn Features
Don’t rely solely on your announcement post. Tap into the many LinkedIn features to highlight your career. This will help your profile get discovered in search results. Keep in mind, your LinkedIn profile is an online portfolio. Enrich it by using these sections to show your message.
About section: include you are seeking employment within the first few lines in this section so it is clear and visible.
Headline: Update your headline to include as many of these as possible (using 220 characters): Target job title, 2-3 skills/keywords, industry, noteworthy achievement.
Featured section: Upload your professional bio, networking document or marketing plan.
Public or Private Open To Work: Public means the green banner shows up on your profile picture. Private means only recruiters who pay for LinkedIn’s recruiting tools can see your status. Most recruiters agree it’s good to easily see your availability.
Don’t Add An End Date (yet): LinkedIn favors profiles with current employment. There are three options for how to work around this.

To maximize the reach of your announcement you can take these steps:
- Be responsive to comments or reposts of your announcement. Go one step further and privately invite anyone who comments to touch base on a call.
- Share this exact message on other social media platforms. Any of your friends would be willing to help.
