Have a weird situation at work and would appreciate some advice. As some background, I’ve been with my company for nearly 3 years (6 managers, 4 re-orgs). I’m a project manager and the SME for my area. My current manager, “Nancy” has technically managed me for 1.5 years but was on FMLA twice (~6 months total). We do not mesh well, and I find her very negative and draining.
Nancy’s manager, “Sydney,” is the head of our department (order is CEO -> VP -> Sydney -> Nancy), and managed me during Nancy’s absences. Sydney and I work really well together.
Timeline of Issues: 1. First Annual Review (Pre-FMLA #1): Nancy told me I was “meeting expectations” with minor areas to improve. After Nancy went on leave, Sydney reviewed the official report (“not meeting expectations”) which Sydney told me she disagreed with a lot of the specifics (I’d been under her for ~4 months at this point). This meant I didn’t get my yearly increase or bonus. 2. Mid-Year Review: Nancy had only worked with me for 2 of the 6 months but relied on peer feedback. The feedback (per Nancy) was all negative, including from Sydney and another manager, both of whom I worked well with. I got so much done during those 6 months (very measurable things) but to hear her tell it I did nothing. What also struck me as odd was that Nancy provided feedback via Excel instead of Workday which we normally use for our process, and she seemed almost gleeful to be giving me bad feedback. 3. FMLA #2: Nancy left again, and I returned to working under Sydney. I got so much done, largely because I wasn’t bogged down by Nancy, and actually enjoyed work again.
Which brings me to present day – Nancy is back, and working with her is just as awful as I remember. It’s just roadblock after roadblock with her. She specifically brought up that she got good feedback about me while she was out and that’d be reflected on my yearly review. That’s what she said last time. I don’t trust her, and I think she’s lying about the feedback she’s receiving, but obviously have no proof other than that I got really discrepant feedback between what I got verbally vs the summary she gave me.
Sydney has asked that we continue to work together closely at least throughout the rest of the year, so we’re continuing our 1:1’s and she’s basically continuing to support me on some of the projects I’m working on. Given I have such a good relationship with Sydney, I’m contemplating bringing this up with Sydney and/or asking if I could move teams or officially report to her instead, but not sure how to approach it.
Any advice?
