I was promoted to a store manager a little under four months ago, and I’ll be honest it hasn’t been the best. The store was a wreck and I was tasked with hiring an entire new team and training them myself. I was told I’d have support, but other than a team coming in to remodel, I havnt had anyone other than my district manager visit for a few hours once every four weeks or so. I’m going to be honest, I got the vibe that I wasnt doing the best, but when I tried to seek out feedback I was met with a lot of neautral feedback. For example, my boss kept telling me the merchandising and truck shipment needed work. I also heard that our training needed to be less chaotic. All criticism that I tried to take in and improve on. But when I asked them directly, I was never told I was doing BAD. In fact, she even called me early last month when I was spiraling to tell me that that weren’t going to fire me and that she wouldn’t have put me in this position if she didn’t think I could do it. Last week, we had a regional manager visit. Again, I got the vibe it was not a good visit. When I asked her she told me that realistically I wasn’t given enough time to really turn things around before the holidays, and that she was going to give me support and help me get things in track… well now this week my “support” showed up and said that they were considering firing me if I didn’t turn things around soon. I asked him directly if he was talking about me loosing my job and he said “we’re talking about all of you losing your jobs” (meaning the other managers on my team and I).
I’m frustrated because I did actively seek feedback, and have had nothing come of it. Not once have I had a proper coaching conversational forum or a PIP. I hate that they’ve placated me until it came to this. But that aside, how should I go about this? I’m debating on reaching out to my district manager directly and asking her to provide additional clarification and maybe a timeline or measurable goals. All I’ve gotten from this guy was that we didn’t have long and needed to turn it around SOON. Hes in my store for a few more days, and I could ask him to clarify but he’s weirdly cryptic.
Apologies if this isn’t the most legible, I’ve been an emotional wreck.
