Last year I worked for only like 3 weeks in October but I did a damn good job and had a great time, easily my favorite job I’ve had. Unfortunately on November 1st I was alone in the back room and tripped over an uprooted bolt in the floor, bruising my kneecaps in the process and it hurt to stand and walk for that time after. I texted the work groupchat for help but nobody answered and it was 10 minutes later that someone came in by chance. The DM was there so we made an injury report. I was taping up boxes and putting shelves in them, so I went back to it and tried to do that sitting down with a coworker handing me the flat cardboard and it was fine. The DM gets mad that she’s helping me so she sends her away and I’m alone again and in too much pain to walk. I drop the word “liability” because I was genuinely concerned for mine and others safety and since there wasn’t any work I could do I got sent home. After using that word though I was told I’d get the rest of my pay for that shift, which I did.
I didn’t mean to but it definitely makes me think this bridge got burned. But I mean if the building has trip hazards and you put someone in that hazardous room alone with no camera in sight, that’s a problem. What if I hit my head when I fell? Help wouldn’t have come for 10 minutes and that could have been extremely bad. Like wrongful death lawsuit bad. I’m concerned not just for employees but for the company because I know that would be bad for just about everyone involved, so the way you fix that is either have a camera back there so if an incident happens it can be seen by someone, or just have two employees back there at once as a buddy system! That way if someone falls and does hit their head there’s no wait on a 911 call. You don’t even have to fix the floor! But I mean is this something that’s reportable? At this point that store doesn’t want me fine, but I doubt they corrected anything so if I can make it safer with a report somewhere I’ll do it if it’s available.
But I mean is this genuine concern what got me rejected? Are they scared I’m gonna sue or try something to get money? God forbid you want a safe working environment. Do you think I should even try applying to a different store or am I probably blacklisted? I worked for Spencer’s for the holiday season after but that was a different DM so maybe if I just pick a different district I’ll be fine. It’s all a bunch of BS though.
