Hi all! So I (26M) am in a bit of a dilemma regarding my current financial situation and job.
I have been working for a large tech company for 2.5 years now making $67k pre-tax. My boss is hands down the best boss I’ve ever had. She is only two years older than me, extremely knowledgeable and supportive, and runs an overall great operation. We used to eat lunch together regularly before her responsibilities became too much and she had to start eating at her desk.
My team (two other people besides me report to my boss) is also the best I’ve ever worked with. We have a ton of fun together, chat about our weekends on calls, and they are willing to help with just about everything. The job is very low stress. It is only a 10-minute commute from my apartment, and I get to work from home every Friday. I almost never work OT unless we have a huge deadline come up. I enjoy the work I do for the team and making a difference for the company.
However, I live in northern New Jersey, which is one of the most expensive places to live in the entire country. I am currently paying $2,050 a month in rent, subject to increase when I renew my lease in December. I know this is something paying cheaper rent and living with roommates or living rent free at home would help with this. And it would help, temporarily.
But I eventually want to buy a condo in northern New Jersey. At my current salary, it would take me about 10 years to save up a down payment, closing costs, and emergency fund before I could even begin searching for condos. And even after all that, unless I put down an absurd amount of money I’d be unable to afford my monthly payments. I do have a boyfriend, but he is just starting grad school, and it will be years before he is able to move in with me. I don’t want to wait that long to own something until he can split the costs with me. And even then, what if the job he does get doesn’t pay enough?
I have repeatedly had to turn down social events because I simply can’t afford them. A large Costco run and filling up my car can wipe out my entire budget for the week in one day. Today is a beautiful day, and I wanted to play golf, but I couldn’t, because I had already reached my budget for the week. I hate living like this.
The dagger was also today, because a friend of mine brought up going on a cruise in March. Unless a miracle happens or I win the lottery, I will likely not be able to afford to go. If I were making $90k or more, this cruise wouldn’t be a question. I’d also be able to save up all the money I’d need in 12-18 months to buy a condo if i moved home for that amount of time to accelerate my savings. This, as opposed to 10 years on my current salary. I know renting is not technically a bad thing, but it would feel great to have something that is actually mine.
Anyway, I was thinking about starting to at least browse for other jobs that pay $90k before taxes or more. I would not leave my current great situation for anything less than $90k. However, the thought of saying goodbye to my boss, my team, and my friends at work breaks my heart. And what if I could get to $90k in my current role in a short amount of time?
EDIT: I need to clarify, I am not currently looking for jobs. This is me asking whether I should start.
