Studying Abroad in Monaco vs. Germany vs. South Korea

Studying abroad is a life changing experience that helps you explore new cultures, gain global perspectives, and build new skills. Last year, I had the amazing chance to study at two different universities: the University of Mannheim in Germany, Hanyang University in South Korea, and this year at the International University of Monaco. Each country gave me unique experiences and helped me grow in different ways. Here’s my personal opinion about each country.

Monaco

Studying at IUM was a great experience. While my main focus was on finance, I also studied entrepreneurship, which helped me develop my own start up and share it with global business leaders. The small class sizes made it easy to interact with professors, many of whom had real world experience, and the networking opportunities were fantastic. I even attended events with leaders from famous luxury brands.

Living in Monaco felt like living in a dream. The beautiful Mediterranean views, fancy streets, and famous people made it truly special. However, it was very expensive. Everything, from food to housing, cost a lot, so I had to budget carefully. Despite that, student life in Monaco was great, with plenty of chances to meet people and enjoy the stunning country.

Germany

My time at the University of Mannheim in Germany was very different but also unforgettable. The university is known for its strong business programs, however it had more relaxed academic experience compared to the other places I studied. I focused on politics during my time there, and it was my first time learning this subject, but professors made it very easy to understand and I easily passed all exams. The courses were generally easier, which gave me more time to balance studies and enjoy life outside of class.

Germany was also much more affordable than Monaco. The low tuition fees and student discounts made it easier to focus on studying without worrying about money. I loved the mix of old and new in Germany – from historic castles to modern cities. Also the most beautiful city in Germany (Heidelberg) is only 15 minutes away from Mannheim! The cultural adjustment was easy, although getting used to the punctual and straightforward communication style took a little time. Also as mannheim was just 1 hour away from Frankfurt it was very easy and cheap to travel all around europe, during my time there I visited 6 countries by car and spent no more than $600!

South Korea

Hanyang University in South Korea was an entirely different experience. The academic environment was fast-paced and intense, it was the hardest of the three. The workload was heavy, and the competition among students was tough. However, it was great to have a wide variety of courses that allowed me to explore different things, including unique classes like dance and makeup.

Seoul was an exciting place to live. The vibrant city life, late night street food, and cultural places made everyday an adventure. Student life in South Korea was the best I’ve ever experienced. There were endless social activities, and the friendly, energetic atmosphere made it easy to make friends. Although adjusting to the language and cultural differences was challenging, Hanyang students helped us with everything!

Which destination is best for you?

Looking back, each of these countries gave me something unique. Monaco offered exclusivity and luxury focused networking, along with an introduction to finance. Germany provided an affordable, balanced academic experience with a focus on politics. South Korea had the best student life, challenging academics, and unique course offerings.

Studying abroad is about stepping out of your comfort zone and seeing new perspectives. My experiences in Germany, South Korea, and Monaco have shaped who I am today and prepared me for a global career. If you’re considering these destinations, each has something special to offer and it’s all about what fits your goals and personality.
