Success Stories at Lewis University: Real Journeys, Real Impact

Inspiring Paths at Lewis University

Success isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. At Lewis University, students from diverse backgrounds are embracing their own definitions of achievement, driven by ambition, curiosity, and a supportive community that’s got their backs. Here’s how three students transformed their education at Lewis into the launchpad for their dreams.

Kim Joonhe: Turning Passion into Opportunity in Business Analytics

For Kim Joonhe, studying business wasn’t just about landing a job—it was about exploring possibilities. Originally from Busan, South Korea, Kim chose to pursue both a BS in Business Administration and an MS in Business Analytics, finding in Lewis University the perfect environment to experiment, learn, and grow.

“When I started my degree, I didn’t have a clear career direction, but I knew business would give me options,” he shares. His favorite courses, like data mining and business intelligence, helped him discover his talent for analytics and decision-making. Professors like Dr. Ibrahim turned complex ideas into clear, real-world applications, sparking a passion Kim didn’t see coming.

His journey was more than academic—Kim found a family among other international students at Lewis. “The international students are very active; we spend a lot of time together. I even learned some Spanish from friends and plan to visit them in Colombia next year,” he shares. Thanks to Lewis University’s Career Services and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) program, Kim secured an internship in his third year, gaining valuable experience he could carry into his graduate studies. Now, he’s working full-time at the same company, using his skills in business analytics to develop data-driven models.

Amina Daruja: Soaring High in Aviation and Aerospace Technology

Growing up with an airline pilot as a father, Amina Daruja was always captivated by the science of flight. So when she had the chance to pursue a BS in Aviation and Aerospace Technology at Lewis University, she jumped in. “I remember seeing the inside of a Boeing 737 engine for the first time—it blew my mind that humans could create something so complex,” she recalls.

Known for its standout aviation programs, Lewis provided Amina with hands-on experience at the Harold A. White Aviation Centre, the only university aviation program in Illinois with an on-site airport. Surrounded by students who shared her passion, she was able to explore her interest alongside people from all ages and nationalities, gaining not only knowledge but lifelong friends and mentors.

The university’s strategic location near Chicago opened countless doors for Amina, especially as she prepares to begin Optional Practical Training (OPT) at a company designing fly-by-wire control systems. “It’s amazing to be in Chicago, where aviation is so central to everything. And Lewis helped me every step of the way, from OPT application support to connections in the field.” With her FAA license in hand, Amina’s ready to make her mark on the aerospace industry, aiming high with aspirations to work at a global company like Boeing or SpaceX.

Krishna Reddy Vivek: Finding Community and Career in Data Science

For Krishna Reddy Vivek, an MS in Data Science was the key to unlocking his career potential. “Lewis has an MSDS that can teach the skills I need to analyze and interpret large data sets,” he shares, explaining how courses in data mining and machine learning allowed him to dive deep into high-demand fields like cybersecurity.

Within his first semester, Krishna found opportunities to apply his skills through Curricular Practical Training, gaining practical experience while completing his studies. “I had friends who were already working at a Chicago company, and they recommended I apply,” he says. Through the Senior Capstone project, Krishna was able to integrate his work experience with his coursework, giving him a leg up in the job market.

Despite being far from home, Krishna quickly felt at ease in Illinois. “The graduate courses here are filled with other international students, so we understand each other’s challenges,” he reflects. Living in the Chicago suburbs also allowed him to stay connected to his culture, with Indian restaurants and grocery stores nearby. “Lewis helped me feel at home, even when everything was new and different.” Now, as a data mining analyst, Krishna feels prepared for whatever his future holds, knowing he has the skills and support to succeed.
