When I decided to study abroad in Florence, Italy, for my art education degree, I was eager to immerse myself in the rich cultural and artistic heritage of the city. However, I also wanted my experience to be meaningful beyond the classroom. That’s why I opted to participate in the Choose Earth Micro-Credential program. This initiative offered a unique opportunity to learn about sustainability in a hands-on, real-world context, aligning perfectly with my growing interest in environmental justice and my desire to make a positive impact.
What I Learned About Sustainability in Italy
Participating in Choose Earth opened my eyes to how sustainability is woven into the fabric of life in Florence. I learned about the city’s efforts to reduce waste, promote recycling, and maintain green spaces, which are vital in an urban environment. Italy’s approach to sustainability often emphasizes localism–from farm-to-table dining that supports local agriculture to artisan markets that reduce the carbon footprint associated with mass production and transportation.
How Choose Earth Influenced My Study Abroad Experience
Choose Earth profoundly influenced my study abroad experience by integrating sustainability into my daily routine. I became more conscious of my consumption habits, opting for reusable items and supporting businesses with sustainable practices. This mindfulness extended to my art projects, where I explored using recycled materials and eco-friendly supplies. Additionally, the program connected me with local environmental organizations, providing a platform to volunteer and engage with the community in meaningful ways.
Why Other Students Should Participate in Choose Earth
Participating in Choose Earth while studying abroad is an invaluable experience that broadens your perspective on global sustainability issues and equips you with practical skills to live more sustainably. It fosters a deeper connection to your host community as you learn about and contribute to local environmental efforts. For students passionate about making a difference, this program offers a unique blend of education, action, and cultural immersion that enriches both your personal and academic journey.
In conclusion, the Choose Earth Micro-Credential has been a highlight of my study abroad experience, instilling a lasting commitment to sustainability. I encourage future ISA/TEAN students to take advantage of this incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to a more sustainable future while enjoying the adventure of studying abroad.
