Dr. Todd Felts Study Abroad Scholarship will provide journalism students with an affordable opportunity to study abroad.
Dr. Todd Felts, an award-winning, highly respected, and beloved Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism public relations and communications professor at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), was a bright personality in every room he was in.
Todd unexpectedly passed away in November. He is remembered as a gifted storyteller, beloved professor, compassionate community member, and exceptional friend, husband, and son.
“Professor Todd Felts was a gentle force of nature. Through his warm generosity, he deeply impacted others, whether in a classroom or on a national or international stage. His impact was profound and exponential — as those touched by him undoubtedly have been inspired to touch the lives of others. I am sure that cycle will only continue to grow — a fitting legacy for Todd,” Dr. Alyssa Nota, University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) CEO and President, says.
“His reach could not be contained, exceeding campus and national borders. When he taught on USAC programs abroad, his warmth, wisdom, and storytelling prowess encouraged students and faculty to soak up the special opportunity of international education. At USAC, we are grateful for Todd’s guidance on various communications projects throughout the years. An ebullient, well-loved professor and community member, he gave of himself, his wisdom, and humor to all around him.”
To continue Todd’s legacy of meaningful communication and the importance of journalism, USAC developed a scholarship in his honor. The Dr. Todd Felts Study Abroad Scholarship provides five $2,000 awards for UNR Reynolds School of Journalism majors and minors attending any USAC program beginning Summer 2025.
We hope to continue to share the life-changing impact international education has on future journalists and media industry professionals that Todd both understood and supported.
Todd’s positive and inspiring impact on staff and students
The North Carolina native, who joined UNR in 2008 after a lengthy career in TV news, public relations, and communications, was well-known for sharing advice, tips, and humorous anecdotes. He also happily provided his expertise when needed.
He had an innate gift of making people feel seen and heard and was an encouraging, supportive, and inspiring member of many communities throughout Northern Nevada — and abroad.
In 2015 and 2018, Todd served as a USAC Visiting Professor in Brazil and Spain. During his terms, he taught courses on social media and entrepreneurial communications, providing U.S. students with a deeper look at global communication and its impact.
Dr. Ibon Zamanillo, USAC Bilbao/Getxo Resident Director, says Todd had an enormously attractive personality.
“He was a beloved teacher with an ability to communicate matched only by the expansiveness of his personality. Generous, intelligent, sharp, and a person with whom it was a privilege to converse. He will always be remembered by USAC Bilbao with a smile.”
Todd was not only instrumental in educating students abroad, but he also provided professional development to USAC staff members. From crisis communications training to public relations insights and guiding the launch of USAC’s THE Study Abroad Pod, Todd was a friend and respected mentor who is and will be greatly missed.
