Hey everyone! I’m back with another update from my exchange year at Drexel University, and this time I want to share some cool tips that can help you make the most of your term here. Drexel is a vibrant and unique campus with so much to offer, and I’ve learned quite a bit during my time here. Whether you’re new or just looking for fresh ideas, these tips are for you!
1. Food Truck Galore
One of the first things you’ll notice at Drexel is the sheer number of food trucks scattered around campus. Honestly, there are so many that it feels impossible to try them all in just one term! But if I had to recommend one, it would be the little yellowish food truck near the building where Saxbys is located on Chestnut Street. They serve delicious options like chicken-over-rice, lamb-over-rice, and pita sandwiches. The flavors are out of this world, and it’s an absolute must-try if you’re on campus. Trust me, you won’t regret it.
2. Engaged and Approachable Professors
Back home, professors often don’t know their students personally, especially in large lecture halls. You’re just another face in the crowd unless you’re working directly with them on a thesis. But at Drexel, it’s a completely different experience. The professors genuinely engage with their students and take the time to get to know them. It’s not uncommon for them to remember your name, which makes the learning experience much more personal. The smaller class sizes help foster this connection, making it easier to ask questions and feel supported in your studies. It’s something I’ve really come to appreciate here.
3. Abundant Study Spaces
One thing that stands out at Drexel is the variety of study spaces available. Back in Germany, people mostly meet in the library, and that’s about it. But at Drexel, there are so many options to choose from. Of course, the library is a great spot, and its Dragon Den is a fantastic place to focus. But beyond that, every building has dedicated areas for students to sit and study. For example, in LeBow, there are at least three excellent spaces:
- The student center on the third floor, which is cozy and conducive to group work.
- The lobby with its massive hall, filled with comfortable couches, armchairs, and tables.
- The second floor, where you’ll find round tables in a quieter room as well as high tables by the windows that offer a lovely view of the campus.
These spaces provide a mix of comfort and functionality, making them perfect for studying or just catching up with friends.
4. The Recreation Center
If you’re a Drexel Dragon, one of the perks is free access to the university’s state-of-the-art Recreation Center. This gym is modern, spacious, and packed with equipment to suit all fitness levels. It’s also a great place to try out for club sports like volleyball or basketball. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the campus also has outdoor volleyball courts that are perfect for a sunny day. Staying active has never been more fun or convenient!
5. Fun Events on Campus
Drexel really knows how to keep students engaged with fun and creative events. For example, they host activities like trick-or-treating for college students, where you can explore different departments, learn something new, and collect free candy along the way. Recently, there was an amazing Thanksgiving dinner at LeBow, organized by the staff, and it was such a great experience to share with fellow students.
On top of that, there are always giveaways happening around campus. Whether it’s donuts, hot chocolate, or other treats, these events often double as opportunities to learn about co-op placements or connect with various campus organizations.
Final Thoughts
Drexel is an amazing place with so much to explore and experience. Whether you’re trying new food trucks, enjoying the modern facilities, or attending engaging events, there’s always something happening. I’ve grown to love the campus and all the little things that make it special. Hopefully, these tips help you navigate your time here and make the most of your term.
