My contract was terminated by my previous employer in August and I have been job hunting ever since. Got my letter of offer yesterday for a role with better pay, more support and a clear path for career growth.
I had to tweak my approach to job ads before I got there. Here’s some tips you may have seen before, but they’re proven –
• Have a structured CV/Resume which doesn’t just list your job history but your responsibilities and any accomplishments, write them in bullet points. While at the same time keeping it to 2 pages at most unless it’s a portfolio.
• A cover letter relevant to the position you’re applying to explaining how your work history, skills and abilities make you the ideal candidate for the role. I used myperfectresume for both Resume and cover letter, a fantastic resource.
• Most job ads include a point of contact somewhere usually at the end, follow up after a couple of days to show your interest. These job ads could attract 10s and maybe 100s of applications, following up gives you an advantage.
• Success, they’ve reached out for an interview. Do some research of your prospective workplace. They’ll definitely ask you something like ‘what do you know about us?/ do you know what we do?’, have these questions in mind when you look at their website. They don’t want you to know everything, they just want to know that you have a basic idea about them which also shows that you’re willing and keen.
• Be prepared for the standard interview questions like ‘what are your strengths and weaknesses?’. They’ll laugh at you if you say you have no weaknesses, but instead have one ready and a solution. My weakness I mentioned was that the company offers a myriad of services and it may take some time for me to get up to speed.
• Most important part of the interview for me is at the end when they ask you if you have any questions. Your answer should always be Yes. Have questions ready that relate to the work that you’ll be doing. For example, the role I successfully landed was Territory Manager. My first question was how further can I expand the Territory without stepping on any toes. Second question related to my weakness, is there any type of onboarding or study that will get me up to speed. Third, and a question that should always be asked, what does career advancement look like from my position? The job ad I applied to highlighted the fact that this business promotes from within.
• This goes without saying, and this point should be higher in the list. Be 10/15 minutes early. If your interviewers aren’t ready, it gives you time to get to know whoever you interact with. Those that you interact with positively will sing your praise.
That’s all from me, not much of a public speaker (yet) so thanks for reading my TED Post
