Interested in Finding a Last-Minute Internship Opportunity this Summer?

Act today by contacting 1-3 DU alumni. Use Crimson Constellation, LinkedIn, and other DU social media groups to connect with alumni who can help you find that perfect last-minute internship. See tips below on how to effectively leverage your DU alumni network:

1. Tap into DU’s Student and Alumni Mentoring Platform Crimson Constellation

The University of Denver has launched a new on-line community that you can access that allows you to connect with DU students, alumni, and staff for mentoring and career networking. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Join Crimson Constellation: Create a profile and include your interests
  • Search Strategically: Use filters to find alumni in your desired industry, location, or company
  • Gather Information: Take note of their career paths, current positions, and any commonalities you might share, such as a major or extracurricular activities.
  • Customize Your Message: Understand their background so you can personalize your outreach and make a genuine connection. For tips on how to leverage the mentoring platform, check out the resources page.

2. Utilize LinkedIn’s Alumni Tool

LinkedIn is an excellent platform for connecting with DU alumni. The Alumni Tool can help you find and reach out to graduates who are now professionals in your field of interest.

  • Create / Update Your LinkedIn profile: To use LinkedIn, you will need to have your own LinkedIn account. There are numerous resources available to you in creating/updating your LinkedIn profile including scheduling a 1:1 with your Career Advisor at Career and Professional Development.
  • Navigate to LinkedIn using browser or on-line app: Log-in to your LinkedIn account. Search for the University of Denver LinkedIn page and click on the “Alumni” tab. Or click on this link.
  • Filter Your Search: Use filters to narrow down alumni by company, industry, major, job function, or geographic location.
  • Connect and Message: Send connection requests with a personalized note explaining your background and why you’re reaching out. Share your career aspirations and ask for advice on finding last-minute internship opportunities.
  • Engage Actively: Look for groups related to your field of interest and join. Participate in discussions, share your career aspirations, and/or ask for advice on finding last-minute internship opportunities.

3. Request Informational Interviews (aka Career Conversations)

Informational interviews are a fantastic way to gather insights, expand your network, and discover opportunities that are not advertised. Here’s how to go about it:

  • Identify Alumni to Contact: Use Crimson Constellation and LinkedIn to find potential interviewees.
  • Craft Your Request: Send a polite email or LinkedIn message requesting a brief informational interview. Mention how you found them and what you hope to learn.
  • Prepare Thoughtful Questions: Focus on their career journey, industry insights, and any advice they might have for securing internships.
  • Prepare Your Introduction: Have a concise pitch ready about who you are, what you’re studying, and what type of internship you’re seeking.

4. Follow Up and Stay Connected

  • Maintaining relationships is key to successful networking. Here’s how to do it:
  • Send Thank-You Notes: After any meeting or helpful exchange, send a thank-you email expressing your gratitude.
  • Keep Them Updated: Periodically update your contacts on your internship search progress and any successes you achieve.
  • Offer to Help: Networking is a two-way street. Offer your assistance if there’s anything you can do for them in return.

Remember, it is not too late to uncover an opportunity for the summer!
