The Beginning of Studying Abroad in Cali, Colombia

Patio Exchanges with Roommates

After me and my roommates met and got to know each during the first week, me and one of my roommates Isabel realized that we have an amazing view of Cali, the mountains, and the sunset. We also realized that her window connected to the patio outside and we could see each other. Super easy communication from here on out!

Orientation Week

During our orientation week, we were given a tour of Cali and all its important spots. The left image was taken in Centenario in Museo Jairo Varela. This museum pays tribute to the important culture of salsa and one of the most, if not the most, famous singing group to come out of Colombia called Grupo Niche. It mainly pays attention and recognition to Jairo Varela, who was the songwriter for the band. Afterwards (right image), we went on a walk around El Gato del Río, and saw Rio Cali. It was this amazing river that spans throughout Cali and flows into the Cauca River.

Calle de Salsa

On the first Friday night I was in Cali, Colombia, I was told I had to experience Calle de Salsa. It is this street in downtown Cali with a live band, food vendors, and streets filled with people dancing salsa. This picture was taken from a place on that street where you could see part of the mass of people. It was truly an amazing experience to see so many people enjoying the music and dancing the night away.

San Antonio

On one of our field trips, we went to San Antonio, which is a historical and absolutely beautiful place in downtown Cali. Me and my classmates walked up this large hill, while passing restaurants, colorful buildings, lively people, and the enchanting nature that surrounded us.

To this day, the right image is my favorite I have ever taken. This was of a woman we stopped by who was selling fruit by a corner. I unfortunately felt scared to speak to her because my Spanish is not that good, but we made eye contact and shared a smile. I hope she is doing well.

During our first week of class, me and a few friends decided to take an impromptu salsa class in San Antonio. The photo above was taken right after we had finished and the dance instructor had taught us the 6 basic moves in salsa.

Afterwards we walked around and stumbled upon this park as the sun was setting. The camera does no justice to the sunset we saw together. While we were walking, we decided to stop by some vendors to see what they had. Most of the things we saw were handmade, from the beading on the bracelets to the threading on the dangling earrings.

The people were also very nice and had no trouble telling us all about this amazing city. The right image was taken when I was walking past and saw her making these bracelets by hand. I asked her if I could take a picture of her while she worked. Afterwards, I thanked her for sharing her craft with me.
