Feeling welcomed to China – USAC Study Abroad News

KT learns about the Chinese language and culture during a Chengdu summer study abroad program

By KT Norton, ’19 USAC Chengdu, China

I was inspired to go to China because I am a Chinese adoptee. I wanted to learn more about where I came from in an environment where I would be able to not only learn but also experience the culture in an academic sense.

I was taking Chinese language courses at the University of Mount Union while working toward a degree in communications. Dr. Chen, one of my language professors, encouraged me and everyone in his classes to study abroad to really absorb the language and culture. After thinking about it, I went to the Center for Global Education on campus to talk to someone about the process.

I met with a University Studies Abroad Consortium (USAC) ambassador who went through a program when he was in college. He explained how the program made sure each student knew they were cared for and were welcomed. His experience and understanding of the program made me feel comfortable to go apply.

I signed up for a brief summer session in China and took two language courses: Intermediate Chinese I and Chinese Language and Society. The classes were comprehensive and totally worth it. The teachers there were very understanding and helpful because they knew that this was not only an educational experience, but also a cultural one.

Besides the classes, I recommend going abroad through the Chengdu program just because of the ease of transportation and welcoming atmosphere of Chengdu. My experience with my peers going to Kangding was something I will not easily forget. The beautiful scenery and architecture really made me realize how many other places I would love to travel to one day.

That said, my favorite part about Chengdu was all the different foods there. It is very different from where I grew up. I really, really, really miss the spiciness!!!

I also really liked meeting different people and wish I could have spent more time in Chengdu. Since it was summer break when I went there, our group has only a brief time to meet other students. If I could go back, I think I would take more time to create friendships with other people there. I think the biggest benefit of traveling abroad is that you get to experience a lifetime with someone you have never met and bring that confidence back with you when you return home.

Oh, and another thing, I really enjoyed walking around the school and seeing all the cats! I made a friend who also really liked the cats and fed them when she was able to do so.

The best advice I have for students who want to study abroad in China is to remember to keep an open mind and an open heart to people you meet from other places in your group. We are all from different parts of the United States, so even if we are from the same country, we still have our differences. It’s all a part of making your travel meaningful.

Be willing to be open and experience a new lifestyle. Now, this does not mean there won’t be hard times — because, trust me, there will be. But you take away something from the host country back home and you know that your life has changed from that experience.
