Southern Mississippi University’s graphic design program earns top national recognition

Graphic Design USA (GDUSA) magazine has recognized the Southern Mississippi University’s (USM) Graphic Design Curriculum as one of the nation’s top programs. This accolade is a testament to the thoughtfully developed curriculum, which empowers students to excel professionally in the graphic design world. This recognition from GDUSA is the third such commendation for the program and a proof of the institution’s constant quest for academic excellence.

For Dr. Chris Winstead, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, it’s an affirmation of the high-quality education Southern Miss provides. He acknowledges the hard work put in by the staff and extends his gratitude to alumni for their continued support. Winstead believes that this acknowledgment will draw more scholars, enriching the overall learning environment in the university.

The credit for this national recognition also goes to the faculty, administrative staff, and students for their innovation and dedication. Jacob Cotton, a design associate professor, highlights the steadfast commitment of all involved to the creation of a successful and progressive teaching-learning culture. The program’s focus on practicality, the hands-on approach, and sound theoretical knowledge, prepares the students for real-world challenges that they might face in this highly competitive industry.

Another associate professor, John Lawler, echoes these thoughts but also focuses on the students.

High-quality graphic design education at Southern Mississippi

Lawler commends the practical aspects of the course that thoroughly prepares the students to excel not just academically but in live projects. He praises the students for their evident dedication and for displaying a level of responsibility towards their studies. Lawler also commends his colleagues for working tirelessly in shaping these young minds.

USM’s graph design program stands for visual literacy, aesthetics, conceptual abilities, and creative-problem solving skills. It also offers real-world learning opportunities via its two student-led agencies – Rise Creative, and SPVA Design and Marketing group. Active participation in workshops, guest lectures, internships, study abroad programs, and design conferences enrich the students’ learning experiences. These experiences empower the students to understand global design cultures and keep abreast of the latest industry trends.

Essentially, Southern Mississippi University’s Graphic Design Curriculum is a well-rounded program designed to shape future professionals in the design industry. Anyone considering this field as a career choice might find USM as the place to start.
