While studying abroad, I found it very overwhelming to find good restaurant options. Choosing a good restaurant upon my arrival was intimidating as there are plenty of options in the city, but not all restaurants are created equally. Here is a guide outlining the best restaurants I’ve been to during my time in Madrid, so you don’t have to.
5 Best Restaurants in Madrid:
1. Numa Pompil
This restaurant is perfect for special occasions and offers the most magical and sophisticated Italian restaurant experience. This restaurant is more on par with mid-tier restaurants in the United States which is relatively more expensive for European restaurant options. My favorite dish from their was the tableside truffle parmesan pasta that is tossed in an aged parmesan wheel. Â Numa Pompilo is an authentic Italian restaurant with a great indoor and outdoor garden terrace ambience. It located in the luxury neighborhood of Salamanca. After dinner, you can walk around the cute and historical neighborhood and stop for a gelato.
2. Takos al Pastor
This restaurant is a perfect midday pick me up. Takos al Pastor is located in the Sol neighborhood of Madrid. After a day of shopping, walking around and site seeing, this place is perfect for a reliable delicious plate of Mexican street tacos. This restaurant is a local favorite and often has a line out of the door. Don’t worry! It moves very quickly, and the food is prepared immediately. My favorite street tacos were the Taco Arrachera, which were pulled beef tacos with Salsa Verde. I also enjoyed the classes Taco de Tinga Pollo. I cannot express how cheap and delicious these tacos were. 10/10 recommend this place!
3. Café Comercial
Café Comercial is the perfect balance you seek when going to a restaurant at any time of day. They offer a perfect brunch, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Their bistro outdoor café ambience makes you feel like you are in Europe!! It almost reminded me of Parc in Philadelphia, just with better options. Before classes, I would stop at an outside table for a latter and a Nutella croissant with fruit or a bikini ham and cheese grilled sandwich for lunch. For dinner they offer a spread of meats and salads. This restaurant was by far one of my favorites.
4. Chocolateria Sans Gines
Chocolateria Sans Gines is the perfect dessert restaurant selling an assorted arrangement of desserts including their famous churros and chocolate sauce. These churros were not like traditional churros with cinnamon and sugar but a less sweet and more rich experience with thick chocolate in a teacup with warm doughy churros. If you aren’t into churros, they have other options like milkshakes and delicious sundaes. This historical place is located in the beautiful Sol neighborhood of Madrid, near the beautiful plaza with old museums and shops!
5. Casa Julio
Case Julio is a must visit restaurant on my list for people who are looking for authentic Spanish tapas. In Madrid, it can be difficult to decide on which tapa restaurants to go to. Casa Julio is located in the Malasaña neighborhood which is a super trendy and young area of Madrid. Here you must try the various croquettes. These are fried and crispy appetizers that are filled with creamy cheese, ham, tuna, and spinach. They are so delicious and worth every bite!
