A Day in the Life in Madrid

A typical day in my life living in Madrid for the month of July includes robust and fulfilling days. My day first starts around 9AM, I check the weather for the day, even though it’s pretty much the same every day in the summer. The weather was always sunny and very hot at around 98 degrees Fahrenheit, dry heat, so no humidity. The low humidity climate was great for my hair, fortunately. My wardrobe for the summer in Madrid consisted of long flowy skirts, dresses, linen pants, and a rotation of denim shorts and tank tops. I start my morning with a nice fifteen-minute walk to my favorite and only café that sells closest thing I am going to get to an authentic iced latte. This café was called Los 5 Sentidos and it was located at a middle point between my university residence and campus. The lemon pound cake and croissants were also a plus here. An alternative to my iced coffee café, was to go to Café Commercial which was only about a six-minute walk from my residence. There I would order a café con leche and either a fresh croissant, al plancha, with Nutella and fruit or a Bikini sandwich which was basically a grilled cheese with ham, depending on if I missed the breakfast hour. After my morning walk with Yamima, my best friend who is also studying in Madrid, we would take a walk through the neighborhood before attending class that which started at 1:30PM. We both had the same classes– International Marketing at 1:30PM-3:20PM and International Business at 3:30PM-5:20PM. This was my class schedule every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with no class on Friday. After class, my friend and I would walk to our favorite taco restaurant called, Tikki Taco. They served the best street tacos for only one euro a taco. We would either get dinner at the taco place or fins a new tapas restaurant on the walk home to our residence to find a Tinto de Verano and variety of the bread and olives with garlic aioli and grilled garlic shrimp and croquettes. Dinners in Spain were often smaller and later than what I was used to, but I welcomed the changes and new routine, nonetheless. After dinner, the night often did not end. On a couple of Monday nights, new friends from class would all meet at this Monday night only, disco called Shoto, which was great meeting ground to connect with Americans in Madrid and other students. Getting drinks at a bar or restaurant were common activities it seemed for Spaniards. We also had even more occasions to indulge since Spain won the Eurocup. There were days the city would celebrate with viewings and parades a couple of streets away from where we lived. Additionally, to this, my friend and I would plan weekend trips to little islands off Spain. We visited Ibiza and Mallorca which were paradise. They were beautiful islands with a blend of authentic culture and other influences. My overall experience can be encapsulated by culture, music, and food. I had the best experience in a new city!
