Blowing Out Candles and Building Connections

This week at Drexel University began with the memorial day holiday. Memorial Day is one of the federal holidays in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving  in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.

Beyond its significant purpose, Memorial Day also marks the unofficial start of summer in the United States, which meant a shorter academic week for us!

The week really picked up on Wednesday when I celebrated a friend’s birthday. We went to Parc, a French restaurant in Philly, and had a great dinner. The menu had everything from steak tartare and cheeseburgers to onion soup and mac and cheese. And of course, we had some desserts and blew out the candles, a moment everyone enjoys. I really had a great time since it was the first birthday celebration I attended here in the US!

In addition to the social festivities, the week was also academically enriching. I attended a networking event in my entrepreneurship class which proved to be quite innovative. The activity involved meeting other students and finding those who matched certain interesting criteria we were given beforehand.

Some of the tasks included identifying a multilingual person, someone with more than 10,000 social media followers, or a musician. This event was particularly fascinating because, as the only international student participating, I had the opportunity to share unique perspectives and connect on different levels. I enjoyed discussing Barcelona’s restaurant scene with a classmate planning to visit Spain, providing him with a curated list of dining spots categorized by neighborhood and cuisine type. Another intriguing encounter was with a student who specializes in digital marketing for influencers. He shared insights on how to effectively monetize content on platforms such as TikTok and Pinterest, which I found immensely helpful given my interest in the digital content space.

With finals coming up next week, I spent the rest of the week getting my study schedule in order. Planning ahead like this helps keep the stress down and lets me focus on finishing the term strong.

Despite the shortened week, it was packed with activities that combined fun, learning, and personal growth. Each experience contributed to my overall enjoyment and development during my exchange term here at Drexel. It’s surprising to realize how quickly the term has progressed; it’s already week nine, and the time has just flown by! These moments remind me to appreciate each day and make the most of my time here, as it’s not only about the academics but also about growing personally and making lasting connections.
