Guest Lecture
We had a guest lecture from Professor Emily Wilcox from the University of Michigan on the theme “Revolutionary Bodies: Chinese Dance and the Socialist Legacy.” It was an insightful session that deepened our understanding of the cultural and historical significance of dance in China.
Beijing Opera
During the CET-sponsored excursion, we had an intangible cultural heritage experience of 京剧 (Jīngjù – Beijing Opera). Here we are painting the traditional masks used in performances. It was a hands-on activity that allowed us to appreciate the intricate designs and symbolism of these masks.
Watching a captivating performance of 京剧 (Jīngjù – Beijing Opera) during our CET-sponsored excursion. The vibrant costumes, expressive masks, and dramatic music brought the rich traditions of Chinese opera to life.
Me and 李安娜 (Lǐ Ānnà) trying out the elaborate costumes used in 京剧 (Jīngjù – Beijing Opera) performances. Wearing these traditional clothes gave us a deeper understanding of the artistry and cultural significance of Beijing Opera.
Siheyuan
A class excursion to 四合院 (sìhéyuàn – traditional courtyard residence) in Beijing. This photo captures the beautiful courtyard of the 四合院博物馆 (sìhéyuàn bówùguǎn – Siheyuan Museum), showcasing the traditional architectural style and serene atmosphere of the hutongs.
Hutongs are ancient, narrow streets or alleys that form the neighborhoods of old Beijing. They represent the historical layout of the city and are significant for preserving the traditional community lifestyle, offering a glimpse into the social and cultural heritage of Beijing.
Enjoying 小吃 (xiǎochī – local snacks) with our teachers during the class excursion to the 四合院 (sìhéyuàn – traditional courtyard residence) in Beijing. Tasting these common snacks from the area added a delicious and cultural dimension to our visit.

Ping Pong
One of our CET friends playing ping pong with the 北大 (Běidà) Ping Pong team. This classic US-China ping pong diplomacy moment was a lot of fun and highlighted the spirit of friendly competition and cultural exchange during the 知行中国:中美青年领袖对话 (Zhī-Xíng Zhōngguó: Zhōng-Měi Qīngnián Lǐngxiù Duìhuà – Zhi-Xing China US Youth Leaders Dialogue) event.
