Describe a Competition You Would Like to Take Part in

One key aspect of the IELTS exam is the speaking section, where the student has to demonstrate their language proficiency through speaking. Some students might find this particular part of the exam daunting as they are not habitual of speaking in English on a regular basis. It is an 11-14-minute section divided into three parts.

Today, in the blog, we will focus on the second and third parts of the speaking test. In these, a cue card topic is given, and some follow-up questions related to the topic are given. The student gets a fixed time period to discuss and respond to the questions. We have chosen a commonly asked cue card topic: “Describe a competition you would like to take part in” for the sample answers, so let’s get right to it!

Describe a competition you would like to take part in: cue card sample answer 1

Introduction

The concept of competition is inculcated in our lives from an early stage. Most of us encountered some or other competition in school, which started the shenanigans of competition for everyone for the rest of their lives. Today, I want to share about a competition that I would like to participate in.

What kind of competition is it?

The badminton competition I am talking about is organised twice a year for all the neighbouring kids in the community.

What would you do in this competition?

I will participate in this competition because I have been playing badminton since I was a kid, and the sport interests me a lot. I also always play with the intention of winning.

Why does this competition interest you?

The best part about the competition is that it is a healthy competition amongst all the known people. We get to participate in a group activity with a few festivities that bring people of the neighbourhood together.

Conclusion

Having such friendly competitions is a good way to decompress from the daily lifestyle, interact better with the people around you, and build a positive network as well.

Describe a competition you would like to take part in: cue card sample answer 2

Introduction

Today’s competitions can be viewed positively or negatively; it is up to the person participating in them to decide how they perceive them. In my opinion, one should always participate in healthy competitions. They motivate one to work better, and winning provides a sense of achievement and encouragement as well. Today, I want to discuss a competition I would like to participate in and win.

What kind of competition is it?

The competition I am talking about is a graffiti painting competition.

What would you do in this competition?

The objective of this competition is to generate good ideas for painting graffiti on the city walls and showcasing the city’s culture and history.

Why does this competition interest you?

I have been a painter for a long time, and painting on walls fascinates and excites me. For me, painting on a wall would definitely be a challenge, and it excites me to participate in it. Along with the challenge of painting on a wall, the painting should showcase the culture and history of the city, which is again interesting. The interesting bit is to show my creativity and finish it in the given time. These are a few reasons I want to participate in this competition.

Describe a competition you would like to take part in cue card sample answer 3

Introduction

In today’s world, every individual is competing in some capacity. Children compete to secure good school scores, while adults compete to secure a better job, a better salary package, and whatnot. Likewise, I want to talk about a competition that I would like to participate in.

What kind of competition is it?

Every year, my college organises a Law Fest wherein students from all over India participate in various competitions. I would like to compete in the Parliamentary Debate in it.

What would you do in this competition?

I would participate as the team in opposition and counter the points given by the proposition.

Why does this competition interest you?

This competition interests me because it widens one’s horizon and way of thinking. With these kinds of debates, one gets to know more about what is happening in parliament and express one’s own thoughts as well. In this debate, we also get a chance to rebut the opposing team and counter their opinions on the matter. The team with the most points and the best rebuttals wins the competition. I like the fact that there are no biases in the competition; rather, it is entirely up to the judges and the appropriate points made by the teams.

Conclusion

To conclude, parliamentary debate is a good way to gain more knowledge on realistic topics and learn from the opposing team. It is a good approach to healthy competition.

IELTS Speaking Part 3- Follow-up questions

Question- What kinds of people are considered competitive?

Answer– People who take pleasure in pushing themselves are typically driven by competition. These individuals assess how much they have improved by comparing their performance from yesterday to today, and their real opponent is none other than themselves.

Question- What kinds of competitions are known in your hometown?

Answer– My community is renowned for its cultural and educational offerings. The majority of contests, including the Math, Science, English, and General Knowledge Olympiads, are educational in character. In addition, individuals display their cultural heritage via theatre, music, and the Garba dance.

Question- Why do you think there are many competitive programs on TV today?

Answer– People’s disinterest in daily soap operas and other television programs is the main cause of this change. Competition programs that require participants to exert maximum effort to achieve their best achievements are, therefore, becoming increasingly popular.

Question- How can one reduce stress in this competitive era?

Answer– These days, stress is an inevitable component of life, and the only way to lessen it is to reorganise our priorities. First, we must end needless rivalry with others and concentrate on bettering ourselves.

Conclusion

To conclude, the IELTS speaking section is a great medium for students to express their thoughts and feelings and showcase their knowledge and expertise in the English language. The major difference between the other and speaking sections is that the students interact directly with the examiner. Therefore, it is essential to prepare well for it. The key takeaway for this section is to avoid using fillers and try to speak with as much fluency as possible. Another thing to be considered is to be precise and to the point with the answers, as it is easy to get distracted by the flow.
