Discovering the World of Vikings: An Unforgettable Journey to Iceland

As part of my course, World of Vikings: Facts, Fiction, and Fantasy, I recently had the extraordinary opportunity to embark on a study tour to Iceland. This course has been an incredible deep dive into the world of the Vikings, exploring their history, mythology, and the enduring legacy they left behind. Our Study Tour to Iceland was a pivotal part of this learning journey, offering a chance to see firsthand the landscapes and artifacts that shaped the Viking era.

Exploring Runestones and Viking History

Before our trip to Iceland, we had already delved into the fascinating world of runestones during a field study at the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm. Seeing these ancient inscriptions in person was a powerful experience, providing a tangible connection to the Viking past. However, nothing could prepare us for the profound impact of exploring similar landscapes in Iceland, where the Vikings once traveled and settled.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone

Iceland was unlike any place I had ever visited. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best possible way. We went on hikes that were not my first but certainly my longest and toughest. The rugged terrain, with its dramatic mountains and vast open spaces, was both challenging and exhilarating. Each step felt like a journey back in time, retracing the paths that the Vikings themselves might have walked.

Exploring these natural landscapes allowed me to reconnect with nature profoundly. The sense of accomplishment after completing each hike, combined with the breathtaking views, made every moment unforgettable. The pristine beauty of Iceland’s nature, from its majestic mountains to its serene valleys, left an indelible mark on my soul.

Experiencing Icelandic Culture

Our Icelandic adventure was not just about history; it was also about immersing ourselves in the local culture. We had the chance to try native Icelandic foods, which was an adventure in itself. From tasting traditional dishes to savoring unique local delicacies, each meal was a new experience that expanded my culinary horizons.

Some highlights of the trip were activities I had eagerly anticipated from the start. Horseback riding through the stunning Icelandic countryside was a dream come true. The gentle, sure-footed Icelandic horses made the experience even more enjoyable. Exploring the hot springs and visiting the iconic Blue Lagoon were other unforgettable experiences. The soothing, mineral-rich waters were the perfect way to relax!

The Magic of Icelandic Nature

One of the most magical aspects of our trip was experiencing the midnight sun. The extended daylight hours allowed us to make the most of each day, exploring and soaking in the beauty of Iceland’s landscapes. The surreal light created a dreamlike atmosphere, adding to the overall enchantment of our journey.

Iceland’s nature is truly awe-inspiring. From the thundering waterfalls to the serene fjords, every part of the country seemed to offer a new wonder. It was easy to see why the Vikings were so captivated by this land. The connection to nature felt so much more intense here, and I found myself missing Iceland on the plane back to Stockholm.

Connecting with Viking Heritage

One of the most profound aspects of our trip was visiting museums and historical sites that showcased Viking heritage. Seeing the actual houses that the Vikings built, examining their tools and weapons, and understanding their way of life brought our studies to life in a way that books and lectures never could. We explored the transition from their pagan roots to Christianity, observing the artifacts that marked this significant shift in their culture.

Standing in the same landscapes that the Vikings once roamed, I felt a deep connection to the past. It was fascinating to see how they adapted to their environment, creating thriving communities in such a rugged and beautiful land. The craftsmanship and ingenuity of their creations were awe-inspiring, and it was incredible to witness the legacy of their culture that still endures today.

A Journey to Remember

My trip to Iceland as part of the World of Vikings: Facts, Fiction, and Fantasy course was an unforgettable adventure that broadened my horizons and deepened my appreciation for Viking history. It was a perfect blend of education, adventure, and cultural immersion. The beauty of Iceland and the rich Viking heritage we explored left a lasting impression on me.

Returning to Stockholm, I found myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and the profound connection I felt with nature and history. Iceland is a place that will forever hold a special place in my heart, and the memories of this journey will stay with me always. For anyone passionate about history, culture, and the great outdoors, a trip to Iceland is an absolute must.

Until Next Time,

Sarah
