From what the Yeats would call the “Venice of the West,” greetings! I’m an international student from a tropical paradise who is now getting about Galway, a bustling, artistic city. With its breathtaking scenery and exciting nightlife, Galway has really become my home away from home. I’ll share a brief overview of my adventure.
The weather was one of the first things I noticed when I got to Galway. Having come from a tropical nation where the sun shines year-round, the continual downpour and freezing weather truly took me by surprise. Putting on boots instead of flip-flops, I welcomed the brisk Irish air. The regular downpours of rain? Galway’s beauty is enhanced by them, since the city is adorned with an abundance of green hues.
The people here are warm and kind, regardless of the weather. I was able to personally witness the hospitality that the Irish are renowned for. From my classmates, even local stores and lecturers, went above and beyond to make me feel at home. The people here really made me feel at home since they loved a good “craic,” or lively chat.
It was a seamless transfer academically. A vibrant learning atmosphere is fostered by the varied student body and the supporting faculty. In addition, the city’s historical sites make for interesting study locations!
But it’s not all about hitting the books. The lively nightlife of Galway is a student’s paradise. There is something for everyone, including modern dance clubs and sessions with traditional Irish music. Not to mention the cuisine—fish and chips have emerged as my new go-to comfort dish!
Traveling across the stunning Irish countryside has been one of my favorite experiences. A short bus journey away, the Cliffs of Moher provide a welcome respite from the bustle of the city.
It was difficult to get used to the cold weather and the Irish accent, but those experiences have only made my journey more interesting. This trip was nothing short of wonderful, from tropical sunlight to the charm of Galway.
I hope you enjoyed this little peek into my student life in Galway. As they say in Ireland, “Céad míle fáilte” – a hundred thousand welcomes! –
