Hi everyone, I’m Dana. I’m from Nicaragua, and I’m currently studying Biomedical Engineering in my third year at Bahçeşehir University. I joined Bahçeşehir three years ago, and now I’m working in the International Office. It has been a pleasure interacting with different nationalities and learning from various cultures.
Hello everyone, my name is Emily. I’m from Brazil and I’m in my third year, studying International Trade and Business. It will be great to meet you all and answer your questions. Thank you.
Let’s start with the presentation. The university’s name, as Eslem said, is Bahçeşehir University. I know it’s a little hard to pronounce if you’re not a fluent speaker of Turkish, so in short, you can say BAU. It’s pretty easy and catchy. BAU is a member of a global educational network. The one I’m going to tell you about is located in Istanbul, Turkey.
The BAU global educational network has five universities around the world, four language schools, and almost 3,000 partners worldwide. Let me show you the map that we have. Here you are seeing the BAU global map. The white dots represent the universities we have, and the blue dots represent the contact offices we have all around the world. We have one university in Washington DC, one in Berlin, Germany, one in Georgia Batumi, one in Northern Cyprus, and the one I’m talking about today is in Istanbul, Turkey. Has anybody been to Turkey, to Istanbul before? Please write it in the chat box.
Other than the white dots, the blue dots indicate our contact offices around the world in Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Morocco, Georgia, Pakistan, and Mongolia. So these are the places you can contact us and find BAU around the world.
BAU is an international university recognized globally. Here in Istanbul, we have around 30,000 students, with 8,000 of those being international students. This means that approximately one in every four students is an international student, coming from 127 different countries. The spoken language inside the university is completely English. The local life in Turkey is in Turkish, so at some point, you may need to learn and speak Turkish, but inside the university, you can survive without speaking any Turkish.
We have different communities from all over the world, including a Latin American community. We have students from beautiful countries of Latin America like Brazil and Nicaragua. Dana from Nicaragua and Emily from Brazil are here to share their opinions about Turkey, Istanbul, and BAU.
When you are looking for a university to study, what are the things that you look for? Can you write them in the chat box? What is important for you when searching for universities? I’d love to hear your opinions.
BAU has ranked as the fourth-best university in Turkey and 600th among universities worldwide. Among young universities, we have ranked 150th. Your university’s international outlook is crucial when planning to study abroad, and BAU offers an internationally recognized diploma.
Istanbul is a big and complicated city with the beautiful Bosphorus. We have different districts, and all our campuses are located in very central and beautiful places in Istanbul. Let’s start with the South Campus, the main campus right by the Bosphorus. The Bosphorus connects two continents, Asia and Europe, and divides Istanbul into two sides: Asian and European. Our main campus is on the European side, right by the sea.
In this campus, we offer engineering and natural sciences, economics and social sciences, educational sciences, and law faculties. Every department offers education in English, except for law, which is primarily in Turkish. The most popular programs in the engineering faculty are artificial intelligence, software and computer engineering, molecular biology and genetics, management engineering, energy systems engineering, and biomedical engineering. Dana, studying biomedical engineering, can share more about her department.
I decided on biomedical engineering because I wanted to study something related to health and understand the human body while incorporating innovation and engineering. I searched for biomedical engineering in Europe and found Bahçeşehir University. The curriculum and courses appealed to me, especially since the program was in English.
Starting at BAU was challenging because I previously studied in Spanish. Adjusting to the lecturers and the university’s rhythm took time, but it was manageable. The first year was tough, but it’s not impossible.
We all can make it. And I loved biomedical engineering throughout the years basically because all the engineering disciplines have a laboratory dedicated to them. Biomedical engineering has two labs: one is biomechanics and one is biomedical engineering. In these labs, we can see all the devices that we use for monitoring patients, studying the patient condition, etc.
Now, I’m working on some project proposals for the Research Institute here in Turkey. It’s very nice. You can find the engineering side, you can find the biological side of biomedical engineering, and you can choose at the end of the day what you want to spend your life doing. So that’s been my experience.
Thank you, Dara Jamit. It was great. Thank you so much. You’ve explained it better than I do, actually. So let’s move on to the other departments that we have here. We have the social sciences here as well. We are offering education in economics, economics and finance, international finance, sociology, psychology, political science, and international relations.
And right here, in those departments, you are seeing a black dot called the dual lab. It means that it’s an international opportunity, and I will be telling you all about that international opportunity in the upcoming slides.
We also have the Educational Sciences Faculty located here. Computer Engineering, Computer Education, English Language Teaching, Preschool Education, and Psychological Counseling and Guidance programs are the ones that we are offering. I myself am a graduate of BAU, from the English Language Teaching Department, and I am also currently a Master’s student in the English Language Teaching Department. So all BAU, the Bachelor’s, the Master’s, and I’m working here. You can trust everything I say because it is honest and it is my life.
All of our master programs are also offered here in the South Campus. I’m not sure if we have master students here. If we do, please leave it in the comments in the chat box. If not, I’m just going to skip the master courses quickly.
These are all the master’s courses that we are offering. In the bachelor’s level, everything that we offer is in English. But for the master’s level, we have different programs for different languages and different types. We have English programs and Turkish programs. If it’s stated as ENG, this means that the program language is in English. If it’s stated as TR, this means that the program language is Turkish. We have both thesis and non-thesis programs also offered here in our campus.
Chiara is interested in masters. All right. All of the master courses are happening at night actually between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. because most of the master students are working while they are studying. So that’s why the classes are happening in the evening.
We have two options for master programs: thesis and non-thesis programs. The thesis programs are two years, and non-thesis programs have a duration of one and a half years. If you are looking for further education after a master’s like a PhD, you have to have a thesis degree. But if you are doing it for professional or personal growth, you can go for the non-thesis programs. The courses you receive will be the same for both thesis and non-thesis programs. For the thesis one, you will write, submit, and defend your thesis. For the non-thesis one, you will have a graduation project. It’s not easy, but it’s simpler than the thesis. If you’re not looking for further education like a PhD, you don’t need to have a thesis program.
These are several other programs that we are offering on the master’s level, like game development technologies, astronomy and culinary arts, engineering management, educational technologies, English language education, mechatronics engineering, various law programs, information technologies, industrial engineering, marketing, communications, and public relations. These are the courses that we are offering at the master’s level.
