How I Spent My Weekends in Spain:

My experience studying for the month in Spain was lustrous! It felt so great to explore and adventure a new city and country. During my first weekend, I decided to explore Madrid and acclimate to classes and new friends. I wanted to immerse myself in the culture and history of the new city. One thing that I have learned from my first weekend was that Madrid was one of the most walkable cities I have been to. I was able to walk from Chamberi, my neighborhood, to most parts of the city. I first explored immediate neighborhoods around me including one of my favorites, Chueca. Chueca is home to great culture, tapas and boutiques. It is filled with traditional Spanish architecture and small cobblestone roads. There you can visit small markets like Plaza del Dos de Mayo and San Anton and visit museums and theatres. After Chueca, take a walk to through Retiro Park and visit the Royal Palace and Prado Museum. Here, you get a real feel and sense for the culture of Spain and Madrid. After a morning filled with walking, a siesta is required to make it through the robust nightlife. The good thing about living in Chamberi was that it was walking distance to most of the best nightlife in Madrid. My first night out in Madrid was one I will always remember. I went with my only friend from Drexel University studying abroad to the one and only, La Via Lactea. There we met our first group of friends who were Americans from different states, all teaching in Madrid for the school year. They introduced us to local college students from IE University Business School and we were friends ever since.

The other weekends, we used to explore the islands of Spain. We visited the islands of Ibiza and Mallorca. These islands were gorgeous and filled with blends of different people and cultures. My favorite island was Ibiza. It felt like a well preserved and gorgeous island with vibrant pink flower bushes and deep turquoise oceans warmed by the hot sun. Two of my long time friends I met at Drexel, met me on my trip to Ibiza and we lounged on the beaches and went to two EDM concerts, David Guetta & Black Coffee. We explored Old Ibiza Town and had the best Paella. It was a trip to remember. In Mallorca, the vibe was greatly different from Ibiza as it was much more relaxed and with a large population of those who spoke German. When I arrived, I took note of the added German translations at the airport and on menus. I stayed in the Palma de Mallorca where we were also able to explore the gorgeous crystal teal oceans on a boat tour where we saw gorgeous coves and were able to snorkel and swim in the water. This was time well spent!
