Shifting Perspectives: Embracing Independent Learning

One of the most exciting parts of studying abroad is taking unique, experiential courses at your host university or institution! It allows you to be in a different learning environment than you’re used to back at home, and can broaden your perspective. Through AIFS Abroad, Paige’s spring semester courses abroad were taken at Dublin City University (DCU) in the Irish capital. Located in the heart of the city, DCU is a top 50 university under 50 years old and in the top 5% for business students. Hosting 17,500 students, including 1,400 international students, it also ranks 12th globally for sustainability. Hear about her academic journey and growth as a study abroad student at DCU.

“The transition from the United States to Ireland brought about a significant shift in my approach to learning. Rather than the familiar routine of completing various homework assignments, the focus shifted towards essays and presentations. This marked a distinctive emphasis on independent learning and critical thinking, which required me to recalibrate my study habits and embrace a new way of engaging with course material.

In adapting to the academic environment in Ireland, I encountered the unique challenge of ungraded participation, which required me to learn how to hold myself accountable for attending classes and engaging in discussions. Without the incentive of grades, I developed strategies to cultivate intrinsic motivation, establishing a routine of attending all classes and actively participating in discussions to enhance my learning experience. I found it helpful to establish a routine, set personal goals, actively participate, take notes, review and reflect on class material, seek accountability partners, and utilize academic resources to hold oneself accountable in an academic environment where participation is not graded. This experience taught me valuable lessons about accountability and self-discipline, empowering me to take ownership of my education and approach learning with purpose and responsibility.”

Understanding the importance of getting involved in this global education experience, Paige sought out peers and other key members of the community to tackle her new academic environment head-on.

“Recognizing the importance of actively engaging with the curriculum, I embraced collaborative discussions as a key part of my learning process. Engaging with peers allowed me to delve deeper into topics and develop a more nuanced understanding. However, this adjustment was not without its challenges. In the bustling lecture halls of the first week, distractions posed a hurdle to concentration. Yet, over time, as class sizes reduced and the environment became more conducive to focused study, I found myself better able to engage with course material and peers.”

And the end result of an immersive, high-impact educational experience abroad? Self-discovery and personal growth!

“Reflecting on my experience, I realized that adapting to the academic environment in Ireland required patience, flexibility, and a willingness to adapt. Navigating through cultural differences and academic challenges demanded resilience and perseverance. Additionally, familiarizing myself with the available resources and support services offered by Irish institutions proved invaluable. From libraries to academic advising and counseling services, these resources played a crucial role in navigating the academic journey abroad, providing guidance and assistance when needed.”

Embracing Cultural Diversity: A Journey of Learning and Connection

Studying abroad not only brings your textbooks to life, but it also allows you to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures to expand your horizons. Paige’s global education experience in Dublin gave her the opportunity to learn from other students from around the world.

“Studying in Ireland as an international student has been an eye-opening adventure, thanks to the diverse cultural mix that fills our classrooms. From lively debates to group projects, the blend of backgrounds has truly shaped how I learn.

Interacting with classmates from different cultures has been like opening a door to a whole new world. Whether we’re diving into complex theories or dissecting historical events, hearing different viewpoints has made our discussions richer and deeper.

Working in diverse teams on projects has been a game-changer. We’ve had to navigate through our cultural differences, but it’s taught us so much about communication and empathy. I’ve learned about the cultural, historical, and political atmosphere of Ireland from my peers, while sharing insights into American life beyond the stereotypes.

But it’s not just about academics. Embracing diversity has opened my mind and heart in ways I never imagined. It’s made me more curious, more empathetic, and more tolerant of others’ perspectives.”

Exploring Beyond the Classroom: A Journey of Discovery

Each and every AIFS Abroad program includes social and cultural activities, as well as excursions — and our study abroad program in Dublin is no exception! Co-curricular experiences like these are an amazing way to learn outside of the classroom, and for students to get to know their host region and its culture. Between these unique learning opportunities and the ability to travel in-country and internationally, our students have the ability to see the world and gain a new perspective on cultures and customs in (and beyond!) their host region.

But what travel and cultural opportunities did Paige dive into as an AIFS Abroad student in Dublin? From sampling traditional cuisine and chatting with Irish locals, to visiting both iconic and less-traveled historical sites, she was able to have an authentic and meaningful global education experience.

“One of the unique aspects of my education abroad program was the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich culture and history of Ireland outside of the classroom. With classes scheduled for just two days a week, I seized the chance to explore the country and beyond, turning my days off into invaluable learning opportunities.

Venturing out into the streets of Ireland, I embarked on a journey of discovery, eager to absorb everything this new land had to offer. From sampling traditional Irish cuisine to delving into the depths of local museums, every experience was a lesson in itself. But it wasn’t just about sightseeing—I made it a point to interact with locals, listening to their stories and learning about their culture firsthand.

One of the highlights of my time abroad was exploring the historical sites scattered across Ireland. From ancient Viking settlements to poignant reminders of the Great Famine, each visit provided a deeper understanding of Ireland’s rich and complex history. And it wasn’t just limited to Ireland—I took advantage of my time in Europe to visit iconic landmarks and cultural hubs. In Amsterdam, I stood in awe before Van Gogh’s masterpieces, while in Berlin, I witnessed the remnants of history at the Berlin Wall. Perhaps the most impactful experience was my visit to Auschwitz in Poland, where I came face to face with the horrors of the Holocaust—a sobering reminder of the importance of never forgetting the past.

These experiences went beyond the pages of textbooks, bringing history and culture to life in a way that was both surreal and unforgettable. They provided a deeper perspective on the things we learn about in classrooms, making the lessons feel more tangible and real. As I reflect on my education abroad, I am grateful for the opportunities to explore, learn, and grow outside of traditional academic settings, knowing that these experiences have enriched my understanding of the world in ways that extend far beyond the classroom walls.

Exploring Inclusivity and Diversity: Reflections from My Education Abroad Journey

Paige’s spring semester in Dublin, Ireland changed her outlook in ways she never saw coming. Being part of a new culture and academic setting helped her see how important it is to embrace differences and build an inclusive community.

“In Ireland, a country with a complex history of religious and social strife, I encountered narratives of resilience and perseverance in the face of discrimination. The EPIC museum provided a poignant glimpse into the diaspora of Irish emigrants, many of whom were forced to leave their homeland due to religious persecution or societal marginalization. Learning about their struggles deepened my appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experience and the resilience of those who have faced adversity.”

Venturing outside of Ireland during downtime, Paige visited sites in Europe that showcased the harsh realities of discrimination and hate, such as concentration camps. For her, this experience underscored the ongoing need for collective action to stand up to injustice and build safe, inclusive communities.

“Visits to sites like Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz, and Birkenau offered sobering reminders of the atrocities committed against marginalized communities during the Holocaust. Bearing witness to these sites was a humbling experience that reinforced the importance of confronting injustice and standing up for inclusivity and diversity.

The fragility of inclusivity became evident as I learned about vandalism and arson attacks targeting Holocaust memorials. These acts of hatred served as stark reminders of the ongoing struggle to uphold inclusivity and diversity in the face of adversity. They underscored the need for collective action to create environments where differences are celebrated and all individuals feel safe and valued.”

Studying abroad has made Paige see how imperative inclusivity and diversity are. Her global education experience has given her tools to help create a better world.

“Through my education abroad program, I’ve come to understand that inclusivity and diversity are not just abstract concepts but fundamental values that shape our society. I’ve learned to honor the struggles of the past, advocate for justice in the present, and work towards a future where discrimination and hate have no place. My experiences abroad have equipped me with the empathy, knowledge, and determination to be a catalyst for positive change in my personal and professional life.”

Cooking Across Cultures: A Shared Experience of Inclusivity

During a trip to Poland during her downtime, Paige joined a cooking class where a local Polish woman brought together people from diverse backgrounds, creating an inclusive environment. Through a shared love of food and storytelling, the experience showcased how food can foster connections and understanding among individuals.

“Through the act of cooking and sharing food, barriers were broken down, and strangers became friends. We laughed, we learned, and we bonded over our shared love for food and our unique cultural backgrounds. It was a beautiful example of how something as simple as sharing a meal and learning new culinary skills can bridge the gap between people of different cultures, fostering understanding, empathy, and connection.

In that kitchen, amidst the aroma of wonderful food, I witnessed the transformative power of inclusivity in action. It reminded me that, regardless of our differences, we all share a common humanity, and it’s through moments of shared experience that we can truly come together as a global community.”
