I had an interview with the CEO of a nonprofit this past week. I feel the interview went well; the interview ran over on time because we were chatting and as she followed me out to the lobby she was still giving me information about the job, the pay & benefits. It’s a small nonprofit (2 positions in this branch of the company) so I’d be working directly under her. During the interview she did open up about some of the job responsibilities that were not listed on the job posting, said responsibilities revolve heavily around political lobbying on behalf of the nonprofit, so trips to DC and other large conferences. So I’d be put in some very forward facing activities representing the nonprofit. Which are responsibilities that I’m very excited about!
The one concern I have after learning about these additional responsibilities is my appearance, I have vibrant violet hair (I don’t let it fade and I keep it styled neatly). I’ve been fine in professional settings in the past because I’ve been in the tech & entertainment industries so non natural hair colors weren’t out of the norm. There was a moment of initial shock when the CEO and I first met (nothing over the top just the normal eyebrow raise moment). I did address in the interview that in the past I have worked with state officials and my hair color had actually helped several local politicians remember who I was and had in turn helped me with several business opportunities. But after thinking on it this weekend I have been thinking of sending an email to let her know that I would be happy to adhere to any company code of conduct rules regarding dress/appearance. I know there are laws in place that you can’t discriminate against or ask employees to change their appearance but from my understanding that does not extend to non natural hair colors. I’m not sure if that is something she’d know or if she’d just assume she couldn’t make that request of me.
I’ve never considered changing my hair color for a job in the past (4years strong on the same purple shade) because I’ve always felt that my professional accomplishments speak for themselves and I’ve been able to land corporate jobs no problem. BUT with that being said, I do understand that this job requires me to represent the nonprofit in political situations that could be more conservative so there might be some hesitation to hire me based off of my hair color. I really want to work for this organization and would be willing to change up my hair color for the job.
Should I send an email or let things stay as they are. I’m probably overthinking this because I really want the job, and if I don’t get it I’d always wonder if it was because of my hair.
Additional details: Interview was last Wednesday, I sent a thank you email Thursday. This was the second interview, the first phone interview revolved around the event planning & marketing responsibilities for the position. She told me that she would be making her hiring decision this week.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
